Critical Investigation

Investigation into the Representation and Stereotypical Media views of Women in Sport/Martial Arts films.

I will be analyzing two texts, of which consist of two trailers from two Martial Arts/Sport movies. One of which are ‘Dead or Alive’, the movie adaption of the best video game series Dead or Alive, and ‘Million Dollar Baby’ A winner of 4 Oscars. I will be critically viewing differences in how the representations of women are portrayed in these two trailers and the impact the media creates to represent the ideology and view of women. I will also look at the changing roles of women and the way they are newly represented as protagonists in Sport/Martial Arts films. Both narratives in the films of these trailers are different and portray women in different ways.

For the Dead or Alive trailer, the miss-en-scene starts off with a close up shot of a attractive looking woman’s face with the décor being at a well lit, fancy hotel room, The shot changes into her sitting on a swing chair seductively looking at a man in a suit. She slowly pulls on her underwear, with an extreme close up focusing on her upper thighs connoting some sexual desire and lust, a clear tactic to acquire some attention preferably from a male audience; pertaining to ‘The Male Gaze’. According to (Mulvey), she states’’ the camera lingers on the curves of the female body and events which occur to women are presented largely in the context of a man’s reaction to those events’’. This relegates women to the status of objects, the female viewer must experience the narrative secondarily, by identification with the male. The film also being an adaption of the bestselling video game series completes the needs of a male audience.
The camera cuts into a long shot view as words are spoken between the two and we are immediately thrown a jolt of excitement as the woman pulls out a gun aiming at the well dressed man. The camera then changes into a high level shot, where the woman performs a fancy fly kick, caused by the force of the woman’s attack the camera angle changes into a bird’s eye view of the business man flown into mid air. Immediately, The woman insists that the man to ‘do up her bra strap’, slaving to her demand, the defenceless man does what he is told and is then attacked again by the woman single handily along with another fellow business man. This connotes a sense of power and freedom towards the woman’s representation having total control over not just a man, but two men. This notion of feminine dominance over males isn’t just represented in this film but also in others; such as in many films by Cynthia Rothrock, quoted by the media as ‘The Queen of Martial Arts movies’ where she is portrayed as a protagonist in most of her movies. Her latest martial arts movie Sci-Fighter 2004 and earliest movie being made in 1985 denotes that the roles of women being represented as heroines were valid even 25 years ago. This would also comply with the concept of Mulvey’s feminist theory; ‘’the concepts of women as objects in media and men as subjects contested in some modern films/adverts today’’. Dead or Alive, released in 2006, and being a ‘modern film’ clearly portrays its women’s roles as being subjects and also objects. Throughout the trailer we see women fighting vigorously against each other and against males, denoting that they are independent and dominant. However their clothing being very revealing and exposing, throughout the whole trailer makes them appear as subjects, and figures of the ‘Male Gaze’.

Arguably to Mulvey’s notion the ‘Gaze’ can also be directed members of the same gender for several reasons, not all of which are sexual such as in comparison of body or image or clothing.

The film being adapted by the best selling video game series, in the rest of the trailer we are shown the obvious, allot of violent, feral and energetic Eastern form of fighting which appears quite fictitious and fantasized, and sometimes imitated by young people today and done harm. Influenced by the video game, this could signify violence and apprehension towards its viewers, exceptionally the secondary female audience liking to a moral panic. According to an article by The Mail Online May 2006, ‘The Feral Sex: The terrifying rise of violent girl gangs’ says; ‘’ Such girls, according to a study to be published by the Centre for Policy Studies next month, routinely carry knives and” are prepared to use them".” And, ‘’She was skilled in martial arts and her CV included robbery and threatening and abusive behavior’’. Could this be an influential notion from violent films, or an act of self defense? Either way the fear that violent movies are corrupting females today and creating the violent criminals of tomorrow has captured both the headlines and popular imagination in recent years. Also the social issues of young women in today’s society are a shocking historical change from the behavior of youths 50 or 60 years ago.

Reflection of todays lesson

Today I finalised my chosen question/title for my critical investigation.

''How is martial arts represented in the film industry and how does it effect its viewers?''

However, other students had suggested titles and options where my question could contain a deeper and wider exploration and gave me better options to explore a specific theme within martial arts films which would make my investigation easier.

One of the options I had given to me was to add the theory of feminism..
''Martial arts is mainly based around males, why are females so rarely represented in movies even though they participate in martial arts in reality?''
I think that this question is a great area to focus on as it is quite specific and would be great to research on as I can access information and evidence through my knowledge and experience of this situation.
Although this is a completely different area to my own chosen question, I think this question would be easier and specific.

I also had the suggestion of exploring a film in particular and the ways it has improved throughout the years could be a topic I could explore..
''How has the development of 'The Karate Kid' film changed? What affect has it had on its audience? Are older versions of this movie more successful than the new?
This question could also be a better area to look at because I have watched all of The Karate Kid films many times. I could also apply some historical context to the older versions of the film.

I have realised that the two options I was given by others would be better for me to investigate as the areas are more specific. I will now research into both questions and find out which one would be easier and convenient for me to discover.

REPRESENTATION OF TEENAGERS UNABLE TO VEIW ON WORD OR POWERPOINT

Throughout UK Drama, teenagers are represented in ways where the common ideology of teenagers is shown. They are shown as secretive, stressed and often rude people.
Some UK TV Drama shows include, Eastenders E20, Skins, Misfits and The Inbetweeners.

Representation of Teenagers –
Teenagers are represented throughout UK TV in many different ways. I have come to find that there are assorted types of representations when it comes to teenagers. By looking at the UK Tribes website. I found that the representation of teenagers are put into different categories of all in which I am very familiar with. Some sets which teenagers are known from are chavs, Emos, street rats, skaters, ravers, geeks and hipsters. For example there are mainstream, urban, alternative and hipsters, all of which represent their own styles and ways of living. I believe teenagers are recognised by teenagers through these categories. In most UK TV Drama shows like Eastenders E20, Skins and The Inbetweeners , we are presented with a selection of teenagers who all have different origins, backgrounds and ways of living. This denotes that the teenagers (aimed audience) who watch these programmes will automatically recognise what these teenagers represent and where they come from. I think that by using this idea of representation draws more attention to the show and keep its audience engaged.

Detailed plan of research - Martial arts

In the next two weeks I will be focusing on how martial arts is represented in action movies. I think that ideally and commonly martial arts has been known as a way of expressing anger and violence throughout most martial arts films but as a Taekwondo student and instructor, i believe there is much more positivity to martial arts than just violence and expressing anger.
My aim is to research on well known and successful martial arts films and analyse they way they have been narrated and filmed to create that ideology of violence. I will focus on why people that haven't had any knowledge of martial arts feel this way about these films. To compare, I will also look at other films where martial arts is represented more as a way of life, less stressful, peaceful and disciplined. i think that the way these films have been edited and filmed have a huge role on how they will deliver a message to their audience and also, the way they have been narrated will give audiences a different purpose to martial arts, which is also something I will look at.
It is important for people to know and audiences of martial arts films to know that Martial arts is not always violent is in some parts of the world, like an prioroty and religion to some. In Korea most people and children spend time on Taekwondo than they do on their studies at school. I think that this is the reason to why Korea as a country is a very respected, disciplined country and this ca be due to their commitment to Martial arts.

The methods I will be using to work on my research are by visiting internet sites, movie databases and watching and analysing movies where I can find the right information. I will also be talking to and interviewing my Taekwondo instructor who has been nominated the main body of The British Taekwondo foundation, and new and old students who attend Martial arts clubs to find out their views on martial arts and the way it is/ has been represented.

Areas where I need advice on:
I need to know how I can get some textual evidence on how Korea is a disciplined country.
I need to know if its okay to use my instructor's views as research for my investigation.
If this topic of martial arts is enough or appropriate to investigate.

Potential Essay Title: Investigation on the representation of Martial Arts.

Brief for Linked production:
- A short film ????
- A documentary on a martial arts student life, focusing on the way it has effected his social life and confidence and discipline - inspired by the 1984 karate kid movie.

Marxism - Blue pill and Red pill

Analysis of Youtube Blue pill and red pill clip

The scene I am anylising is from the movie 'Matrix' which instantly reminds me of the similar word 'Marxism' which could connote its meaning throughout this movie.
We are presented with middle aged white man welcomed by a tall black man. The sound of lightning and rain in the background as they speak connotes a dull and gloomy era to the scene. '' I imagine, that right now you feel abit like Alice.. tumbling down the rabbit hole?'' (taken from the narrative of Alice and the Wonderland) and '' do you believe in fate?''.. ''no because I don't like the idea that I'm not in control of my life''. These two quotes are spoken by the two characters which instantly connote the idea of marxism and the idea of being in two different worlds. The young white man is offered two pills, one red and one blue as if he has been given a choice of which way he wants to live in.
He takes the red pill and the scene closes into darkness and the same era of gloomyness to give the audience a worried feeling.

Marxism and the media Reflection

Marxists ideas have had an huge impact on Cultural theory and Ideology.

He has believed the most powerful force in society was the economic self interest of the dominant social class and the struggle with the 'up and coming' subordinate classes or groups. The ideology of the social society therefore a legitimation of the ruling classes and their position.

Society is seen to be motivated not by consensus but by conflict. I agree with this ideology as I believe society is being slaved (working for) the ruling classes, through being tempted by companies and the goverment.

Questions for mest 4

1. I need to know what media production type, (film) would be more time efficient and easy to do in the time given.

2. Clearly, how does the production piece link to our research?

Homestudy Objectives

I have noticed that I have not completed one of the Homework tasks on the movie ; The Elephant 2003. I found that I had stopped at a certain stage where I needed to watch over the scene to complete that part of the question. I think that if I complete my homework soon after it is given I will remember more of the media text therefore it will be easier for me to stay on track. I can also visit youtube to re watch a certain scene so I will get a better understanding.

Homework Secondary Text.

Elephant 2003 - Representation of teenagers

What are the social, Historical, Political and Economic contexts of the two opening sequences?
Use a secondary text to support your arguments.

The first screenshot shows male and female teenagers during a lesson, this connotes that the school is a mixed college. The teenagers are typically represented taking notes and asking questions about their topic just like a normal ideal lesson.
The second screenshot is of the teenagers dad in a car where he shouts his dad out the vehicle, so he could take the wheel. This could connote a disturbing response to some viewers as he is clearly disrespecting his father. His father then expresses through a hand gesture which connotes he is agreeing for him to take over, almost as if he is being forced. I chose to capture this particular screenshot as there is much to say about it due to the fathers expression.
The third screenshot shows a girl kissing the teenager we are used to seeing from the beginning of the film. This could connote that they are in a relationship, but it looked as if she was just a friend because of the way he did not explain to her why he was upset.
